A Japanese university professor once visited Nan-in, a Japanese master, to learn about Zen.

Nan-in served tea for the professor. He poured his visitor’s cup full and then kept on pouring. The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. “It is too full. No more will go in!”

Like this cup, Nan-in said, you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I teach you anything unless you first empty your cup?

Like the professor, we sometimes have our cups full, thinking that we know everything we need to know to get to our destination.
